Cellulite is simply a layer of fat underneath the skin. It becomes more noticeable when the underlying fat deposits begin to push through the layers of collagen fibers or connective tissues under the skin. Cellulite is most noticeable on the thighs, buttocks, stomach and our bingo wings. That’s because as women, those are the areas we tend to carry most body fat.

Facts about Cellulite

Causes of Cellulite

When our body produces less estrogen (especially as we age), it also means poorer circulation, decrease in new collagen production and our older connective tissue will start to breakdown.

Less estrogen = poorer circulation, decrease in new collagen production, breakdown of older connective tissue.
Estrogen = a hormone that helps keep blood vessels flowing smoothly.

When I was still in college and before I started exercising, I use to have very noticeable cellulites on my upper thighs and also tricep areas It used to make me really self-conscious and it would prevent me from wearing shorts or dresses. When I walk, I would always think, is someone looking at my legs, what nasty comments would they possible make. Even up till today, if I sit on my bum too long or do no exercise, my cellulites become more noticeable. Well ladies, it’s going to be our best friend for life, so we better start learning to love it and manage it!

Here are 5 natural and proven ways you can reduce the appearance of your cellulite.

1) Dry Brushing

Dry brushing is a very traditional technique to improve circulation, remove toxin from the body and in return, reduce the appearance of cellulite.

The first thing you have to do is to buy yourself a body brush made with natural fibre. Get a brush with a long handle to make sure that you can reach every part of the body.

Here are the steps of dry brushing:

Because dry brushing also energizes and stimulates the body, we want to make it part of your morning routine. Dry brush daily for 5 – 7 minutes before shower. I know it can seem a long time for some of you including myself.

So now that, you’ve just opened up your pores, any body treatments you apply in the shower will be more effective. So let’s hope into the shower and enjoy a good Coffee Scrub.

2) Coffee Scrub

Having regular coffee scrub is another proven natural way to reduce the appearance of cellulite. Coffee scrub can improve circulation, remove dead cells, regenerate new healthy cells make your skin more firm, tight, soft and hydrated.

To make your own coffee scrub, you only need:
1) ¼ cup Coffee Grounds
2) 3 tbsps. Sugar (brown or white)
3) 2 tbsps. Melted Coconut Oil

Mix them together in a jar to form a paste. Wet your entire body, apply the mix onto your skin and massage in circular motions, focusing on areas with cellulites. I like to do this while sitting on a stool.

Finally, rinse it off with lukewarm water and have a warm shower. Follow this remedy 2 to 3 times weekly until you’ve seen results. Keep any excess coffee scrub for future use.

3) Drink lots of Water

The next tip something we tend to take for granted, which is to drink lots of water. Drink at least 8 cups (2L) of water every day to make sure your body is hydrated, to reduce water retention and to also flush out any toxins from the body.

Drink 2 cups of water on an empty stomach first thing in the morning and continue drinking throughout the day. What I like to do before going to bed every night, is to fill up a bottle with half a litre of water, and when I get up in the morning, the first thing I’ll do is drink the entire bottle. My body will be rehydrated and it’ll instantly get my digestion going. I like to also add lemon slices into my water and I always carry a bottle of water with me when I’m out.

Another useful tip is to eat more foods with high water content such as cucumber, melons and leafy greens (more than 90% water).

Just by drinking more water, you will start to see your cellulite reduce drastically and as a bonus, you’ll also have healthier looking skin.

4) Increase Omega 3 Intake

Add foods that are rich in Omega 3s such as salmon, oily fish, flax seeds, chia seeds, avocado, walnuts, spinach and edamame. Or for convenience, take fish-oil pill on a daily basis. It has been proven that adults who take omega-3 fatty acid supplement on a daily basis, slows down the decline in muscle mass.

5) Get Active

And the final tip to fight cellulite is to Get Active! Exercising tones the muscles by reducing fat under the skin, and replace lost muscle tissues. As a result you’ll have tighter looking skin making the cellulite less noticeable.

I have seen tremendous result by including jump-based exercises into my routine. If you can’t include jump-based exercises, that’s ok, the goal is to work on your entire lower body muscles from every angle, the front and back of your thighs, inner and outer thighs, buttocks and hips.
